Lauderdale-By-The-Sea is an oceanside village located in Broward County on the barrier island between the Intracoastal Waterway and the Atlantic Ocean. It is just north and east of Fort Lauderdale and south of Pompano Beach. It is one of ten underwater archaeological preserves designated by the Florida Division of Historical Resources.

While many high-rise condominiums continue to be built along the beaches in other oceanfront communities, the town has limited the building heights of new construction. Near the center of town, the new development of Oriana and the planned Villas By The Sea are examples of the existing building height restrictions. Further north along State Road A1A, the newly completed AquAzul and the soon to be completed ultra luxurious Europa By The Sea also conform to the height restrictions.
