Although settlers began arriving in Boca Raton at the turn of the twentieth century, it wasn't until 1925 when Addison Mizner, a well known Palm Beach architect, announced his plans to build the thousand room Boca Raton Hotel with lush green golf courses that Boca began its evolution into the modern city of today and the second most populous city in Palm Beach County. Mizner's distinctive style of architecture, Mediterranean Revival, is prevalent throughout the city and especially in downtown Boca.

The cultural center of downtown is Mizner Park built in 1991. It is a tropically landscaped park centrally located and surrounded by upscale shopping and fine restaurants. It is also home to the Boca Raton Museum of Art and an Amphitheater providing a large-scale outdoor entertainment venue.

Resurgence in the downtown area has led to the development of many new Mizner inspired developments such as Palmetto Place, Boca Grand and Eden. 200 East, a collection of condominium and townhouse residences, is currently under construction and the luxurious Meridian, only steps from the beach, has recently been completed.

Boca Raton has many well-manicured single family residential neighborhoods on the water, near golf courses and close to the Boca Town Center which houses such stores as Nordstrom's, Saks Fifth Avenue and Bloomingdale's. Royal Palm Yacht and Country Club, Boca Greens, Boca Bay Colony, Camino Gardens, Boca Dunes and Century Village are just some of the communities located in this city.

The city is also home to many exception schools including public "magnet" schools, competitive private schools and notable religious institutions. Florida Atlantic University, a member of the State University System of Florida makes its home here located just off of Glades Road and serves over 20,000 students.
